December 2004

I have spent some of my gift certificates already. They were burning a massive hole in my pocket…

I got a coat from the Gap, black and hip-length, nubby wool and very structured with big buttons, a half belt in the back and four square, military-style pockets. Very Jackie-O. Then I got these Steve Maddens from Nordstrom (in Natural Multi), although I might return them, I’m not 100% sure about them. I like these (in Green Leather) a lot, and these (in Pink Suede) and also these (in Brown Leather).

Dora the Explorer is the lamest kids tv show ever.

Rest in peace, Jerry Orbach. You will be missed.

Ten years ago, I was a sophmore in high school and Weezer was my favourite band. I still have my fan club zipper pull from 96, a point when there were only three members in all of Alaska and I knew the other two. I had just gotten my hair cut into a chin-length bob, dyed blue-black, for the first time (a haircut I would continue to come back to, again and again, and will likely continue to). You could typically find me dressed in men’s thrift-store Levi’s, a v-neck sweater and Chuck Taylors, swilling coffee. I had a massive crush on Quentin Tarantino.

The huge difference between the “me” of then and the “me” now makes me wonder how big the difference will be in another ten years.

Paint me a picture of the you that existed ten years ago.

  • CD’s: Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison (it’s also a DVD), Neil Young, Led Zepplin, The Flaming Lips
  • “Hip: the history” by John Leland
  • Clothing/Accesories: My Mom nailed it this year, total Anthropologie-esque. I got a knee-length grey plaid skirt with a floral under-slip and a belt, a cream angora sweater with a (detachable) light brown faux fur collar (the non-cheesy/juniors department kind), and a champagne coloured satin button-up shirt with a defined waist and tiny silver buttons. Also, a wee handbag in gloriously nubby wool of black with pink and yellow.
  • A ring with a massive birthstone (blue topaz), straddled by six diamonds. (!!!)
  • The little book that was released for Mark Ryden’s “Blood” show, complete with bookmark, SIGNED to me, personally, by Mr. Ryden. (Again, !!!)
  • Gift certificates: $75 for the Gap, $100 for Nordstrom, $40 to my favourite salon/spa
  • Hello Kitty desk calander
  • Three new Hagen-Renaker figurines: The Mama rabbit, the Unicorn head up and the Pegasus standing. I need to get these ones too, before they’re retired. ;)
  • “Everyone cares about how they look, some people just don’t do anything about it. Thing is, you always leave an impression even if you don’t want to.”

-Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips

Hope it’s a good one for all of you. ;)

    xoxo
